OCCRL Movies That Matter: 'The Hate U Give'

Join film screening of "The Hate You Give"Engage, Educate, Empower

The Office of Community College Research and Leadership (OCCRL) invites you to engage in critical-cinema stories designed to stimulate minds and bring forth candid conversations. Candy, pizza, and popcorn will also be a part of the Friday flicks at the College of Education.

Our second featured film is The Hate U Give directed by George Tillman Jr.

In the film, Starr Carter (Amandla Stenberg) goes back and forth between two worlds—the poor, mostly black neighborhood where she lives, and the wealthy, mostly white prep school that she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds shatters when she witnesses the fatal shooting of her best childhood friend at the hands of a police officer. Facing pressure from all sides, Starr must find her voice to stand up for what is right.

Please RSVP to Sal Nudo at snudo@illinois.edu if you want to join the screening!
