UPDATE Newsletter Fall 2008, 20(1)

Editor's Note

OCCRL is working closely with the ICCB, ISBE, and the Illinois Center for Specialized Professional Support (ICSPS) on a set of guiding principles and design elements for Programs of Study, an essential requirement of the Perkins IV legislation. The principles and elements are being reviewed by workgroups of practitioners for their use as a framework to guide implementation and evaluation of Programs of Study. This issue of Update contains an interview with Nebraska’s state director of CTE, using Illinois’ guiding principles as the basis for the interview topics. Nebraska is considered by many as a leading state in implementation of Programs of Study. The second article covers an in-depth exploration of issues related to principle two: access, equity and opportunity. The third article presents OCCRL’s role in the planning and implementation of programs of study in Illinois. In the fourth article, three nationally recognized CTE leaders provide answers to a commonly raised question: “What’s so unique about Programs of Study . . .?” The final article presents early findings from an evaluation conducted by OCCRL on the College and Career Readiness Act. Issues related to college and career readiness will comprise the Spring edition of Update newsletter.
